Hero’s Journey™ from a Black Perspective is our newest life coaching programme for young Black men in prison.
Adapted from our Hero’s Journey™ life coaching programme and co-designed with young Black men with lived experience, it addresses the specific experiences of young Black men in the prison system, who are over-represented.
What happens on the Hero’s Journey™ from a Black Perspective programme?
Our award-winning Hero’s Journey™ life coaching programme has been proven to improve young men’s wellbeing, their confidence and resilience, and their decision-making and problem-solving skills, as well as improving their perspective on the future.
As part of Hero’s Journey™ from a Black Perspective (HJBP), during group workshops specially trained professional life coaches support young Black men to identify what they want in life and how they can achieve their goals.
A central part of the Hero’s Journey™ from a Black Perspective model is that participants are supported to engage with the topic of Black identity, and the experiences and attitudes linked to the individual’s view of themselves as a member of the Black male community. The HJBP workshops provide participants with a safe space to think about their own views and experiences. This is then followed by one-to-one coaching sessions, which will start in prison and then continue through the gates, into the community.
Piloting the programme
The Hero’s Journey™ from a Black Perspective pilot ran in HMPYOI Isis in early 2020, and after the first workshop one young man shared his experience with five people on his wing. Before it began, young men were asking to enroll on the programme and we now have a waiting list of young Black men wanting to take part.
Working alongside Dr Bianca Bailey Wilson and an esteemed advisory board, including Dr Patrick Williams, Dr Remi Joseph-Salisbury, Cassandra Beckford and Adrian Stretch from Her Majesty’s Prison & Probation Service (HMPPS), we aim to have a positive impact on young Black men in prison, who are over-represented in the prison system (The Lammy Review, 2017)
“I am excited and honoured to be part of the Spark Inside HJBP programme. Just witnessing the positive energy shift in these young men as they navigated their individual Hero’s Journey should remind us all to never, ever doubt the awesome potential lying dormant within every human being”.
