This spring, we brought The Conversation, our systems coaching programme, to HMP High Down. Using Deep Democracy, the pilot created rare and vital space for prison staff and residents to speak honestly, listen actively, and begin reshaping the culture together.
Over three powerful sessions, we saw real shifts in how people related to each other. Participants explored power, pressure, and shared accountability — and even laughed together. Difficult topics like Spice were tackled with mutual respect, and participants left with practical commitments to improve daily life on the wing.
From new collaborations on how social spaces are going to be used, to increased visibility of wing leadership and a more nuanced understanding of each other’s challenges, The Conversation has sparked change — not just in words, but in behaviour.
Our evaluation found improved communication, trust, and a sense of shared purpose.
Here’s what participants told us:
“Before, I wasn’t open to having conversations with staff. Now, there’s mutual respect.”
“The Conversation reminded us that everyone in this building is a human being.”
“It’s opened the door to meaningful conversations — we now have a better understanding between us.”
We continue to work in High Down delivering Hero’s Journey. Watch this space for where we go next with The Conversation.
