In an opinion piece for The Justice Gap this week, Vicki Cardwell welcomes the preferred new candidate for Chief Inspector of Prisons, Charlie Taylor, and describes the unique moment of opportunity we are at for a lasting change in prisons.
Vicki highlights the two main priorities for the incoming Chief Inspector: restoration of rehabilitation and education, and a focus on effective alternatives to prison, particularly for young people. Vicki said:
“The pandemic has seen prisons emerging changed and ready for more change – virtual family visits via conference calls after years of stop-start have been widely introduced, online learning is evolving. Change is in the air. We urge the new Inspector to follow a healthy tradition of robust, innovative thinking.”
